Due to the high number of child protection cases associated with substance abuse, the Center has been charged with providing resources and in-service training to IDHW staff about addiction and to educate substance abuse agencies about the complexities of child welfare mandates.
To this end, the Center has a Substance Abuse (SA) Training Specialist on staff, who provides or arranges for : - training,
- technical assistance,
- curriculum development,
- evaluation and consultation
to promote the integration of substance abuse treatment and education among Family and Children Services (FACS) programs, staff, foster parents, parents, community partners, providers and students statewide who are serving FACS clients. The Specialist provides training and program development for FACS Division staff, parents, community partners and resource families on the following topics: - Substance abuse and family violence
- Motivational interviewing
- Family-centered practice
- Fetal alcohol syndrome
- Dual diagnosis
- Pharmacology
- Human development
- On-line curriculum is being developed for resource families related children in care and substance abuse issues
The FACS/SA Training Specialist also participates in the Idaho Educators of Addiction Studies (IDEAS) meetings, the Addiction Technology Transfer Consortium (ATTC) Network, and SA Workforce Development meetings which add to opportunities to improve the integration of the substance abuse treatment system and other FACS programs. The FACS SA Specialist is available to work with FACS Division staff, regional Children and Family Services (CFS) Program Managers and staff, central office and regional Adult Mental Health/Developmental Disabilities (MH/DD) Program Managers and staff, the Regional Substance Abuse Authorities (RSAAs), the SA Primary Service Contractor, and sub-contract clinicians. Rocky Mountain Quality Improvement (RMQIC) The Center provides technical assistance training, project evaluation, and assistance with the implementation of the Rocky Mountain Quality Improvement Grant (American Humane) which places Substance Abuse counselors in CFS offices. These counselors provide pre-service supports and appropriate referrals to families who meet the SA criteria. Please Contact Us if you need assistance or additional information.
